Episode nine: The 8C Competizione supercar paid homage to tradition with one eye firmly on the future
The 8C Competizione provided a laboratory for the future founded in Alfa Romeo’s roots.
Identity, values, styling and technical prowess epitomise the brand’s pursuit of option power-to-weight ratio, perfect balance, and driving precision.
Faced with the challenges of the third millenium, the motoring world stopped for a moment to admire Alfa Romeo’s new jewel: “It's called 8C, and I think it's simply the most beautiful car ever built" was how Jeremy Clarkson described it on the BBC.
Starting with its name, it epitomised the essence of Alfa Romeo, evoking the "eight cylinder" models of the 1930s and the "Competizione" of the 1950s, winners at Le Mans and the Mille Miglia.
The 8C used brand history to inspire its styling: sensual yet classic.
It influenced all the ensuing models, including MiTo and Giulietta, and had a very close relative in the 4C, a compact technological and sensual supercar.
In short, a success and a milestone: the 8C attracted 1,400 orders from all over the world in a few weeks, and the 500 numbered cars were all sold long before being built!
