Episode eight: design, sportiness and innovation made the 156 an authentically successful Alfa Romeo
A million people in dealerships at its launch and over 680,000 sales overall: the 156 was one of Alfa Romeo’s greatest ever successes.
Presented in 1997, it rapidly won over customers and critics and won the all-important “Car of the Year” award in 1998.
The 156 mixed strength and innovation with classic Alfa Romeo charm, while also reviving the colourful influences that had been distinctive aspects of the Carabo and Montreal models.
It was also a game-changing car from a technical perspective, featuring innovations that transformed it into a new kind of sports car, combining power, lightness and control: the eternal features of the Alfa Romeo DNA.
Beautiful, thrilling and a born winner: in 10 years of Touring Car championships it won 13 titles.
